On Jan. 25, the TD Place Arena will host an exciting hockey showdown as Ottawa Fire Services faces off against the Ottawa Police Service in the annual Sirens Series. The game, following that day’s Ottawa 67’s match, marks the kickoff to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation’s Heart Month celebrations. This year, the rivalry is fiercer than ever. After Ottawa Fire Services claimed victory at the?Fight for the Cure?cancer fundraiser, tensions are running high. “We came out on top last year, and they came out on top the year before,” said Ottawa Police Association president Matt Cox about the annual hockey game. “So, this is the true rivalry.” While the game promises plenty of action, the real focus is on raising funds and awareness for the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, one of Canada’s leading cardiac centres. All funds raised throughout February will support innovative research, patient care and life-saving programs that have made a significant impact on heart health in the region. Lianne Laing, president of the UOHI Foundation, highlighted the vital connection between the Heart Institute and first responders: “They are often the first to the scene in a cardiac event, getting patients to the Heart Institute for treatment.” If hockey isn’t your cup of tea, there are plenty of other ways to get involved. Throughout February, iconic buildings across the city will light up in red to raise awareness, while local businesses sell paper hearts, with proceeds benefiting the Heart Institute.
